I went to my first Podcamp in Toronto this past February. It was probably a bit more so schmoozing event between sessions as there is a huge PR/marketing community in my neck of the woods, I found that component of the event valuable. I got a lot out of a few really strong sessions and the weak ones made me wonder why I  missed a day of skiing. Everything else including dress, you pretty much nailed it on the head as far as descriptions go. Perhaps using the word camp describing an  (un)conference event involving digital marketing, PR, social media, web 2.0 should be on the list of banned words. They still had electricity and projectors and all that ... but still, even though it had somewhat of a camping aspect, NONE OF THEM DO NOW (to my knowledge) and I'm all for bringing real camping back!! That really was a scattering of tents infested by high-profile geeks, all pitched in Tim O'Reilly's rather expansive backyard in Sebastopol, CA.  I hear-tell there were campfires and suchlike, though wifi and other facilities were in use. Since that event was seen as rather elitist due to the invite-only nature of Friends of O'Reilly (the FOO in Foo Camp), BarCamp was spawned as an open event. Some of these BarCamps did in fact involve tents in backyards, but as further mutations of the camp-as-unconference spread, the tents fell away.  Some still involved sleeping bags under office desks, though.
